![]() ![]() The headphone socket front right will be 1/8" only and the crossfader curve knob on the front of the unit protrudes and cannot be pushed in as with certain designs, in order to tuck out of the way when it isn't needed. The switches are flush to the surface of the unit and the backlit buttons are hard plastic while having a firm "click" when pressed. The two line faders will be recessed and have some decent resistance and all of the knobs are properly bolted on to the faceplate. The AMX's volume faders will be recessed on the faceplate and it'll come with a mini Innofader for its crossfader section built-in. It also features a black top panel, with a bright red base and four thin rubber feet, and like the Kontrol Z1, it is shallow, which means you will definitely want a stand of some kind for it if you pair it up with turntables or CDJs, which would otherwise dwarf it. ![]() It is plastic yet it feels high quality, especially as it comes with a great Mini Innofader built-in. It is small and near, squatter, and wider than the Traktor Kontrol Z1, a controller with which it seems to share similarities. While the Akai AMX unit bears the Akai Pro name and it feels more like a Numark device, mainly as its knobs are lifted straight from the NS7UU (Numark and Akai Pro are sister brands). The AMX is designed in tight collaboration with everyone's favorite New Zealanders and the integration is fully apparent in use. The reasoning for using the Akai branding here isn't entirely clear - there will sit quite happily in the Numark range - what is probably more important is the Serato brand that appears on both devices. It means the AMX and AFX owe technology and design debts to earlier products from, in particular, stablemate Numark. While the Akai name has not been attached to the Serato native kit before, Akai is one of the many brands in the formidable inMusic stable. ![]() Saying Akai is a new brand to the Serato world is, of course, both true and false to an extent. But do these products bring anything new to the table? Among these companies, the latest one to step into the Serato world is Akai, with their brand new AMX and AFX units. The ecosystem of Serato products seems to have expanded tremendously in recent years, with native control solutions appearing from many manufacturers. ![]()
